Transforming Perceptions

These past few years have brought a whirlwind of emotions between becoming employed, moving half-way across the country, and finally having the ability to focus on myself, my weight loss, and my faith. This blog is a reflection of all of these items and how they interact with each other.

Golf Tournament

The Riverview Golf Tournament is over and it was a huge success!!! We made over $3,500 for our ministry - a great start! Thank you to all our sponsors and attendants! We had 52 prizes, plus first, second, third, last, and a few others. We pulled it together! Next up, Riverview Connexxxtions weekend...which is also this weekend.

Also, to give a quick update. Our military drive in July went great! We received 225.5 lbs of items and it was mailed to 8 different units. Hope it's all helpful!

Time to get some rest and hit the store...

Just An Update

Things have been positively CRAZY!!!!

My friend had her baby on September 8th, so I'm trying to step up with Compassion Team and do all that she was doing, which has been more than I expected, that's for sure! Here's the 411...

This Saturday is our Riverview Golf Outing, which will help raise money for our Compassion Ministry. If you're interested, it's $75 a person, teams of 4, shotgun start, scramble. I've been busy with a few other team members gathering prizes for the tournament, and we're tidying everything up these past few days.

Also this weekend, our church is having a Connexxxtions weekend where all the ministries are going to have tables to discuss how people can get involved. We're trying to throw our table together and get people to be at the table, especially for those of us running the golf tournament.

I have decided to start another small group (bible study) and haven't decided exactly what I want to lead...that will be upcoming.

I finally mailed the military drive stuff out...all 225.5 lbs of items, 9 packages, 8 different units serving in Iraq or Kuwait.

I am heading up a Lansing Area AIDS Network food drive with the Compassion Team at church for the month of October, and Matt may be working on getting a team of volunteers to help with their walk on October 2nd in East Lansing.

I am also working on my Halloween packages for my troops. I love you guys!!!! I'm sorry I haven't written in a little while, I'm going to have to catch up!

I'm thinking about volunteering in the Kid's Ministry again...but don't want to do too much since I just started being on the Welcome Team. Hmmmm...guess I'll pray about that.

I hope to go apple picking this Sunday.

Next Sunday we're setting up a baby shower for another friend.

Oh! And I overslept this morning...set my alarm clock wrong...whoops. Luckily I wasn't *that* late for work.

I am sure that I forgetting a ton of things, but if I think of them later, I'll let you know! :)

WiFi Meets Nature

Only in Michigan does some of our state parks and harbors now have WiFi. (Announcement here) This technology is now taking over the world! No matter where we turn, technology will be there. You go camping to get away from it, there it is now! Everyone complains that not enough people go out and enjoy the world, but instead they are lazy and sit watching TV or surfing the net...yet now we're allowing internet access while people are camping! Camping is a time to be with friends and family and enjoy the outdoors! Sing songs around the campfire, y'know? My one only true hiding place from our techno-driven world has been camping, and now I may not even be able to enjoy that...

Michigan

I sometimes don't understand Michigan laws, policies, bills, and those that our Senators and House of Representives bring into the spotlight. When it comes to this, Michigan is way in left field when I'm used to things around home plate, to put it simple. There are just certain things I cannot agree with.

1. Changing the hunting laws allowing younger children to hunt on their own. This is unsafe.
2. Wanting to get rid of the motorcycle helmet law. The death rate for motorcycle accidents will increase.
3. Allowing the following law to pass: "Michigan residents could fatally shoot someone who breaks into their home or vehicle without facing criminal or civil prosecution under legislation introduced Wednesday." (Lansing State Journal article)

Do I need to say anything more?

No Title

I guess I should talk briefly about why the current administration of this country scares me. Maybe "scare" is the wrong word. I really didn't want to get into this on my blog, but with everything that is going on, I just need to write about it and discuss it and clear my thoughts. I feel like we are going backwards instead of forwards.

First and foremost, the church and state have to stay separate. I don't care who you are or what you believe in, but your religious beliefs should not be incorporated into your bills, policies, or laws...even your decisions when you are in control of our nation, whether you are a Supreme Court Justice, in the Presidential Cabinet, or even the President himself. You cannot be biased because of your religious convictions and you should not suppress a whole population for that fact only. I do not think it's proper and even constitutional (because of the separation of church and state, although the Supreme Court sees otherwise) to have the Ten Commandments displayed in the courts. I do not think students should have to say the Pledge of Allegiance because we should not be forcing people to say "Under God," not everyone is going to believe in God. America is a melting pot and it should recognized as this. Granted our Founding Fathers were Christian and America back then was Christian, but in this day and age, everyone is not Christian. We need to be open to this. I support stem cell research 100%, and I am a Christian. I am pro-choice, and I am a Christian. It is not my place to deny a woman an abortion - I would do everything in my power to try and stop her because I do think it's wrong, but it's not my place to ban it nor should it be our government's. And probably the most controversial: I support civil unions for those who are gay. And for those who wanted to criminalize gay sex? That to me is like saying let's criminalize premarital sex (not going to happen) or let's criminalize alcohol consumption again (yeah right). We should not be dictating other people's lifestyles, what they should do or what they should be like - in the end, God is going to have the final judgment on how we lived our lives. I am going to live my life as a Christian, I will talk to whomever about the issues and explain the Bible to them, but in the end, I cannot decide what is right - they will.

A few other things...

As much as I agree with Republicans on their stance concerning foreign policy and our military, it is the Democrats who target my top priority and that is public health, preventive health, health care coverage, hospitals, etc. It is my field, it is my job, and it is my passion. If I remember my statistics correctly, since the Bush Administration was elected in 2000, among those aged 18-64 years in Michigan, the proportion who had health care coverage has decreased by about 3 percentage points between 2000 and 2004. But then again Michigan has the worst job market right now and the highest unemployment rate (or in the top two, I'm too lazy to look it up right now).

Phew...that was a load off my chest.

Ramblings about the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

The Rehnquist five were together in the Bush v. Gore decision, which critics predicted would tarnish the court's hard-won luster. The closing paragraph of a book Rehnquist wrote on the court's history may stand as his answer to criticism.

Rehnquist noted that the court makes "demonstrable errors" from time to time, but he added, "It and the country have survived these mistakes and the court as an institution has steadily grown in authority and prestige." (Yahoo News Article, click link for reference)

Can the United States survive these kinds of mistakes? I question this because I am feeling our economy crashing under the Bush Administration. We have increased our debt by how much? Let's wave that magic wand for another $10 million to go here or there.

I am literally afraid under this administration. We can invest so much time and effort into securing our nation for bioterrorism, but we completely fail those who need us in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We have response teams for bioterrorism that actually work (after the London bombings), but when it comes to a natural disaster, people are still waiting for relief nearly a whole week later. I'm absolutely disgusted. It takes Bush two days to realize the severity of what happened in New Orleans, and it's so sad that he had to go do his job as President of the United States and leave his vacation after only two days in which he flew over LA. He finally gets to LA and MS on Friday. How fast did he respond to the tragedy in NYC by physically being there? What about the tsunami tragedy? I want to know why this is different. I am hopeful though, that after the tours on Friday that things will move faster. You can never give up hope. But for those who have lost a number of family members, and those children who no longer have parents because of our ineffective federal government (and apparently it is only ineffective for this tragedy in America, but we're being effective in Iraq and Afghanistan still...the irony), how can we ever repay them for what they lost?

I am also frustrated with the FEMA director, placing blame on the victims themselves for not leaving. Why not sucking it up and taking some of the blame yourself? Apparently FEMA has a plan for this kind of disaster, but apparently it's never practiced because it's been ineffective. How can somebody under the poverty line afford to evacuate a city? AND, it was not anticipated that a levy was going to break.

Like anything, you do have to tread lightly on what you hear on the news. I know good things are happening in Louisiana and Mississippi and public servants are working many long hours to help as many people as they can. I just ask that they focus on helping people and not worry too much about the looters (unless they are harming somebody). God will punish those looters for their greed.

So what have I been doing? I am part of a national organization called Operation Quiet Comfort (OQC), the link is on the right. Our main goal and mission is to send transition kits, supplies, and quilts to injured men and women in field hospitals in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Serbia. An idea to raise some money to help send these needed items, we have been making cooling neckties. After this tragedy, we decided to make cooling ties for free, for all those wonderful people serving down in the gulf, or as many as we can physically make, but this has quickly expanded. This current weekend we are doing a drive with the Young Marines of Monroe County to get many supplies to people who need them including families of the MS National Guard. The drive is going great!!!! We also know first hand from members of this group in Louisiana the devastation that has occurred. Houma, Louisiana, where a few of our members are from, has yet to receive ANY aid in their community and many people have been coming to their centers for relief with nothing being there. Luckily one of our members is getting some mail, so we are trying to support that area as much as we can as well.

Also, the State of Michigan has been activated to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We have not been called to help yet (except for our National Guard who I believe left today), but we are preparing if we have to. As a public servant myself, I feel the need to help, so as soon as I talk to my supervisor, I will volunteer to go if this is the case. It is on my heart, and it is something I can do with my expertise in epidemiology.

As much as I like to put blame on somebody, we just have to unite as a country, step forward and help our brothers and sisters get through this. I think this is why I like supporting the military and hold our military in such high esteem - they are willing to sacrifice everything they have to help those in need, and many are willing to sacrifice everything they have for a fellow comrade in battle. There is never a question or doubt in their mind, it's just what they do. It's how this whole damn country should be like, no matter where we came from or what we look like or what kind of resources we have. Would you be willing to sacrifice what you have for a fellow American? I also want to say I highly respect all servants in this capacity, firefighters and policemen included.

There is one last frustration I do have. There are so many rich people in this country, and I am talking about those who are FILTHY rich, who would spend $100 million on a house, y'know, the professional sports players, movie stars, rock stars etc. Giving $1 million each would not break their accounts, but instead, you have rock stars who are fundraising by giving benefit concerts. I wouldn't mind a benefit concert if they were maybe matching what they raise, but why can't they give on their own? I understand they may be trying to get to those populations that wouldn't ordinarily give...but I just find it odd that they'd do a benefit concert and not give something by themselves as well instead of soliciting for somebody's hard earned paycheck who may be struggling in life themselves. People should give because they want to give, I truly believe this.

Sorry for my many opinions, I usually try to tone it down a little, but it's how I feel. I need to get back to sewing...doing and helping instead of talking...y'know? How 'bout you go do something as well? (For those who are now in Iraq or Afghanistan reading this, you are doing plenty!!!!) Need an idea? I got 20...leave a comment or send an e-mail.

Chief Justice Rehnquist Passes Away

Let me first say that I do have a lot of thoughts about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but at the moment I am currenting *acting* on my feelings and not just *talking*. It frustrates me when people can talk the talk, but never walk the walk when it's needed. It's fine time people shut up and do something. And that's what I'm doing.

But for now, I have decided to post briefly on the death of Chief Justice Rehnquist. He was a good man, and had many values, but I did not agree with many, if any, of his rulings. This, in part, is because I am not nearly as conservative as he was, and it's been a difference in beliefs and priorities. I will not go into this because he needs to be respected for his accomplishments; he was battling cancer and still doing his civic duty as a Chief Justice. He spent 33 years on the Supreme Court, that is an accomplishment many people do not see often.
